Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has branded the 10-match ban handed to Luis Suarez as “absurd
The Uruguayan striker was given the hefty suspension for biting the arm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during last weekend’s 2-2 draw with the Blues at Anfield.
But while Reina admits that Suarez should face punishment, he believes the severity of the punishment given is extortionate – and thinks the Reds striker wouldn’t be as harshly treated if he was English.
Reina said: “People in England are treating him different because he is Uruguayan; because he has had a previous episode like this.
“He knows perfectly well that what he did was wrong but a 10-game ban seems to me absurd, out of proportion and unfair…There is a lot of hypocrisy. Some players are treated differently to others.”
In 2006, Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe was booked for biting the arm of the then-West Ham midfielder Javier Mascherano, with no retrospective action taken against the England international.
The lengthy ban will rule Suarez out of action until September and has led to speculation that he will look to leave the Premier League this summer after a series of controversies.
Liverpool have until midday on Friday to decide whether they wish to appeal against the decision.
