Tottenham went out of the Europa League on a rain-drenched pitch in Switzerland on Thursday evening, losing to Basel in a penalty shoot-out to break Lilywhites’ hearts. Spurs went into the match missing Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon, Jermain Defoe, Sandro, William Gallas and Younes Kaboul. Considering at least five probable starters if they had been fit were missing, Spurs’ remaining players did excellently to force the tie to penalties, especially after Jan Vertonghen was sent off in the 82nd minute.
Basel again played with pace, precision and clever passing as the Swiss side grew into the game after the opening to the match but Spurs played well overall. All four goals in this 2-2 draw came from errors. Both of Clint Dempsey’s goals for Spurs came from defensive mistakes as did Basel’s.
