Arsene Wenger has called on the Arsenal faithful to show respect to former star Robin van Persie when the Dutchman returns to the Emirates with Man United, reports The
Van Persie left the Gunners for Old Trafford in a £24m switch last summer, and has since become something of a hated figure among the stands in North London, especially considering that he has been a big part of United’s push to regain the Premier League title.
Wenger, however, has rallied on the club’s fans to treat van Persie with the respect the player deserves, both as a former Gunners servant and as a champion of England.
He said: “We will respect the players that have played for us a long time as we always have done and treat them well before and after the game. As a champion or not as a champion it is exactly the same.
“What I want is for us to have a good game and to beat them, it doesn’t matter what kind if status they come with. We’ll see.”
United arrive at the Emirates on Sunday and could potentially already have secured the title if they attain victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Monday evening.
