Arsenal eager to offload costly Chamakh

Arsenal are desperate to find a buyer for Marouane Chamakh, the Daily Mirror has reported, as the newspaper reveals the striker has thus far cost the Gunners in the region of £14m – scoring only 12 goals in his time in the Premier League.

Chamakh ended the season on loan at West Ham United but failed to make an impact in Sam Allardyce’s side – despite the Hammers paying £40,000 of his £93,000 per week wages. The Morocco striker was able to request such a hefty pay packet when he left Bordeaux for Arsenal three years ago because he was on a free transfer, but Arsene Wenger has seen little return for his investment.

The 29-year-old manager 11 goals in his debut season at the Emirates Stadium but it has been a case of diminishing returns since then, with the following campaign garnering just one goal for Chamakh, while this year saw him net only twice, both coming in the League Cup against Reading.

He made only four appearances this season for Arsenal before being loaned to West Ham, but West Ham have no interest in extending his stay at Upton Park. Instead, Arsenal are hopeful Real Betis or Bordeaux will follow up on their mooted interest and save Arsenal from paying Chamakh’s full salary for a further 12 months.
