Bale scoops FWA Player of the Year award

Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale has followed up his PFA Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year awards by winning the Football Writers Association (FWA) Player of the Year award.

The award is given to the player that receives the most votes from a group of around 400 UK football journalists, with Robin van Persie and Scott Parker winning in the previous two seasons.

Bale, 23, adds the award to his collection following a season that has seen him net 19 goals in 29 league matches, helping to propel Tottenham to a position competing for one of the sought-after Champions League places.

His post Christmas form has been particularly impressive, with the Cardiff-born forward scoring 13 in his last 14 appearances for Spurs.

Tottenham face Southampton at home this weekend as they look to keep the pressure on Arsenal and Chelsea ahead of them in the fight for Champions League football.
