Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio is already turning his thoughts to next season, and ITV
The Wearsiders scored only 41 goals in the Premier League all campaign, with Steven Fletcher bagging 11 of those efforts. Only Stoke City and relegated Queens Park Rangers scored fewer throughout the entire campaign.
The goals noticeably were missing when injury ended Fletcher’s season prematurely in March, and in his absence, neither youngster Connor Wickham nor Danny Graham managed to find the target, with Graham yet to break his duck for the club following his January move from Swansea.
Di Canio will sit down shortly with Sunderland owner Ellis Short to discuss plans for next season, in an aim to avoid being so close to relegation trouble. Sunday’s final day defeat to Tottenham saw the club finish 17th, just three points clear of the bottom three.
Di Canio revealed: “We need to bring in quality, particularly up front, because to win games you need to score and we don’t score many goals. We don’t have many weapons in our side at the moment to damage the opponent.”
