Liverpool must sell before they buy Tottenham utility man Rose

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to sign Sunderland’s on-loan Tottenham Hotspur wide player Danny Rose, the Daily Mail has reported, but has to clear space in the squad before making any moves this summer.

Rose has spent the season at the Stadium of Light and been impressive, the newspaper claims, despite the Black Cats’ struggling at the lower end of the table for most of the campaign. The Mail claims Paolo Di Canio is keen to sign the 22-year-old on a full-time deal but faces competition from Rodgers, who has twice attempted to buy the ex-Leeds United player.

Rodgers is working with a budget of £20m this summer, the newspaper claims, and is already struggling to make the funds available fit his identified transfer targets. That means the former Swansea City boss will have to offload squad players or capitalise on any interest in some other members of his team, with the Mail claiming Rodgers will consider selling Jose Enrique, Stewart Downing, Andy Carroll and Pepe Reina.

Liverpool ended their first season under Rodgers in seventh place, one place higher than last year under Kenny Dalglish, two points adrift of Merseyside rivals Everton.
