Liverpool ready to sell Downing, Shelvey and Coates

The Daily Mirror believes Liverpool are preparing to offload winger Stewart Downing, but will not make him available for loan.

Downing cost the Reds £20m two years ago when he moved to Anfield from Aston Villa, but failed to set-up a single goal in his debut season at the club.

Although he had a better campaign second time around, including three Premier League strikes, five assists and an experimental stint in a left-back role, it seems like Brendan Rodgers is happy to listen to offers for the 28-year-old. Fulham have expressed an interest, but only want to do a loan deal with the Merseysiders, so look set to be frozen out of the market.

As Rodgers prepares to build on a seventh place finish, other players could be shown the exit door.

Jonjo Shelvey looks set to pay for his difficult second half of the campaign, as he will be made available for transfer. Sebastian Coates will face a similar fate, but not until Rodgers has brought in two central defenders.

On Coates’ future, the boss added: “Seb has been a great support player for the group. Obviously his chances have been very limited. That’s unfortunately how it is sometimes as a defender.

We will sit down when he comes back for pre-season and take it from there. We have to see what the summer brings.
