Liverpool to make a move for Porto winger Atsu

Liverpool could be set to recruit cut-price winger Christian Atsu, reports The Mirror.

The club have identified Atsu as a high priority signing in the summer, with Oussama Assaid looking set to leave the club he joined in the summer.

Reports indicate that the Kop will also listen to offers for former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough midfielder Stewart Downing, who has struggled to find his feet at Anfield this season.

The Mirror claims that Atsu has a release clause in his contract at Porto of around £10m, but with him only having a year left on his deal in Portugal hopes are high that the former Champions League winners will listen to offers in the £3m mark and cash in now rather than losing the star on a free next year.

They have been trying to get Atsu to commit to a new contract with a much larger release clause, but the player has thus far refused, stating that he wants to move to the Premier League.

He is said to favour a move to Tottenham to work with former boss Andre Villas-Boas, but with the North Londoners yet to make an approach the path appears clear for Liverpool to get their man.

Atsu said earlier this week: “There are times when we have to think about following our dreams and this is the time to follow my dream.

“Since I started playing football I have dreamt to play in the Premier League. I will be sad to leave Porto but if I leave I would want my future to be in England.”
