Liverpool will attempt to exploit any interest Barcelona have in signing goalkeeper Pepe Reina by pushing for a swap deal involving young forward Christian Tello, according to the
Barcelona are likely to be in need of a senior goalkeeper after Victor Valdes confirmed he wanted to leave the club, with Reina seen as the ideal candidate as a graduate of the club’s famed youth academy. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted he does not want to sell Reina but the newspaper believes he could be convinced if a deal involving Tello was on the table.
Tello, a versatile attacker capable of playing through the middle or in a wider berth, is considered one of the hottest properties in Spanish football and, at 21, fits the brief of players Rodgers is targeting.
The player’s contract stipulates his release clause at £8.5m and he is thought to be considering leaving the Nou Camp after struggling to break into the first team. Reina is valued in the region of £10m by Barcelona, having made his debut for the Catalans when he was 18.
Reina moved to the Reds from Villarreal after failing to force his way into the Barca first team, heading to the Yellow Submarine in 2002, leaving for Anfield three years later. He has gone on to make almost 400 appearances for the Merseyside club.
