Luiz set to be offloaded by Mourinho after Chelsea return

With Jose Mourinho expected to be finally confirmed as the manager at Chelsea in the coming days, talk has begun on who he might let leave west London, and the Daily Mail indicates David Luiz is set to be one of the big casualties.

The 26-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge from Benfica in January 2011 for £21m, but hasn’t always looked convincing in his regular central defensive role. A move from Rafael Benitez into a defensive midfield position seemed to suit him better, and his form improved as the season progressed. However, Mourinho is still uncertain of his defensive abilities.

Barcelona are considering a move for the Brazilian and, ironically, so are Real Madrid, the club Mourinho is leaving at the end of the season.

The Portuguese manager has desires on at least one striker, a defensive midfielder and a centre-back, and has drawn up a shortlist of defenders to join skipper John Terry, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic.

On the list include youngster Raphael Varane, who Mourinho knows from Real Madrid, and Krygiakos Papadopoulos from Schalke 04.
