Man City captain Kompany wanted by Barcelona

Manchester City could face a fight to keep hold of captain Vincent Kompany after Barcelona turned to the Belgium international when their interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Silva was rebuffed, the Daily Mirror has reported.

The Catalan club are willing to pay £20m to take Kompany away from the Etihad Stadium, hopeful of capitalising on any unhappiness the skipper holds over the sacking of Roberto Mancini. Incoming Coach Manuel Pellegrini is understood to want to keep Kompany at City but City could be in for a struggle after Barca made the 27-year-old their primary target for the summer.

Pellegrini has been linked with a move for Real Madrid enforcer Pepe but with Barca’s interest in Thiago Silva rejected and forcing the Spanish champions to concentrate on Kompany, Pepe could be a replacement for rather than an addition to the captain.

Kompany moved to City in 2009, signed by Mancini’s predecessor Mark Hughes, and led the side to the Premier League title in 2012. He has also won the FA Cup in his time at Eastlands, moving to Manchester from Hamburg, having started his career with Anderlecht.
