It has been believed that Jose Mourinho was keen to take Modric with him to Chelsea if he is appointed as expected to his second spell at Stamford Bridge this summer, but new Man United boss David Moyes is keen to scupper Mourinho’s plans and convince Modric that his future lies at Old Trafford.
The Mirror understands that discreet enquiries have been made by the Scot about the availability of Modric, and a pricetag in the region of £24m has been mooted.
Former Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had been a long-time admirer of the Croatian international, but felt that difficulties involved in dealing with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy made the prospect of Modric ever moving to the North West a remote possibility at best.
However, with the transition appearing set to occur at the Bernabeu this summer, it is thought Moyes sees an opportunity for his new club to finally get their man.
Mourinho wants to take him to Chelsea too, but Modric has experienced difficulty gaining significant playing time under Mourinho in Spain, and this could prove a key point in the battle for his services.
