Man Utd striker Rooney not a target for Bayern Munich, insists Sammer

Bayern Munich have no interest in signing Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, the club’s sporting director, Matthias Sammer, has said, according to the Daily Telegraph.

It was revealed at the weekend by out-going United manager Sir Alex Ferguson that Rooney had handed in a transfer request and wanted to leave Old Trafford, with the resultant speculation linking the England international to clubs across the continent, Bayern included.

But when asked about the chances of Rooney moving to Bayern at the club’s pre-Champions League final press day, Sammer, a former Germany international now part of the Bayern hierarchy, was unequivocal in his response.

He said: “ I don’t know what Rooney would bring to the Bundesliga. I can’t answer that but I can answer that we have great respect for Wayne Rooney, but there has been no contact with him. He’s not on the agenda. No, no. Absolutely not.

Bayern, who meet Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley at the end of May, will from next season be coached by former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, and, having won the Bundesliga title by a double-digit margin, have already confirmed the purchase of Dortmund playmaker Mario Gotze.
