Juan Mata believes Jose Mourinho will be the right man to take over at Chelsea – and feels that under the Portuguese, the club has to compete for the Premier League title, according to Sky
Mourinho has not yet been confirmed as the next Blues boss but it was announced on Monday that he is to leave current club Real Madrid at the end of the season, while Chelsea’s interim manager, Rafael Benitez, is also to depart his post in the near future.
Mata has never played under Mourinho but is aware of the success he has had at Porto, in his first spell at Stamford Bridge, with Inter and in La Liga. “Jose is one of the best,” Mata said. “He won everything in every country he was – in Portugal, in Italy, in London with Chelsea, and in Spain as well.
“We don’t know really what is going to happen but if he comes he is welcome because he is one of the best and Chelsea always want to be a top side. If he comes we are going to be happy to have him,” Mata continued.
Chelsea ended the season in third place, confirming Champions League qualification, and also clinched the Europa League trophy by beating Benfica through a late Branislav Ivanovic goal. But they were a long way from a domestic title challenge, finishing 14 points adrift of champions Manchester United, and Mata wants to see an improvement on that front next season.
“What I know is that Madrid is a massive club with a lot of pressure on them, and it shouldn’t be easy to be manager of Real Madrid,” Mata said of Mourinho. “If he comes we will try and do our best with him, or whoever, to win the title, because one challenge for me will be to win the Premier League.”
