Madrid were hopeful of persuading the 21-year-old to choose the Santiago Bernabeu over the Nou Camp but Neymar announced his decision to join Barca over the weekend, with the La Liga champions expected to confirm the transfer on Monday.
And Bale could be used as Madrid’s reply, with the former La Liga champions eager to send out a statement of intent to Barca after falling well off the pace in the league table. Barcelona have already been crowned champions of Spain and currently lead Madrid by 15 points with a game to play.
Zinidine Zidane, the former Real Madrid midfielder and now the club’s sporting director, was in London for the Champions League final and publically praised Bale, raising speculation that Madrid would make a concrete offer for the Wales international. It is not certain that Spurs would sell, however – indeed, the Premier League club are said to be hopeful of agreeing a new deal with the midfielder.
