Spurs and Arsenal vie for Villa’s Benteke

Tottenham and Arsenal look set to do battle in the transfer market once again, this time for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, reports The Mirror.

The 22-year-old hitman has impressed during his first season at Aston Villa, having scored 19 goals for the Midlanders.

With recent reports that Spurs and Arsenal are both in the chase for Barcelona striker David Villa, it is believed that Spurs are already turning their attention to the former Genk striker.

The £7m star has been a breath of fresh air in a Villa side that has been battling against relegation for much of the season, and his impact on the club was only highlighted when he scored a hat-trick during the club’s 6-1 relegation clash with Sunderland last month.

It is believed that Paul Lambert’s club could be in line to make a huge profit on the man they paid £7m for just last summer, and with a host of clubs clamouring for his signature the £20m-plus price tag expected to be slapped on his head is not considered likely to put off all of his suitors.

Spurs are thought to be the most keen, with Andre Villas-Boas eager to improve his striking options and provide winger Gareth Bale with a player at the front who can potentially have a similar impact to the Welsh winger.

Arsene Wenger, however, is a confirmed admirer of the striker and he would be unlikely to let rivals Tottenham get their man without a fight.

He is keen to bolster his front line to help Arsenal end their eight-year trophy drought, and sees Benteke as an ideal frontman to head up this trophy hunt.
