Brendan Rodgers believes Luis Suarez will be happy to remain at Liverpool this summer, despite expected interest from clubs across Europe, in part because the Reds have remained loyal to the Uruguayan during his repeated incidents of wrong-doing, according to the
Suarez is currently in the middle of a 10-game ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in a match at Anfield towards the end of the season, little over a year after Suarez was suspended for eight games for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.
And Rodgers feels it is the support Liverpool have offered Suarez during such times that will ultimately persuade the former Ajax forward to stay at the club – although the manager admits this summer could see some parties try to tempt Suarez into leaving Merseyside, much as was the case last summer too.
“There’s a small percentage of players who are world class and he’s in that bracket, so I don’t think it will be too dissimilar to when I first came in last summer, with clubs making their interest known,” Rodgers said.
With Suarez due to represent Uruguay in the Confederations Cup he will come into close contact with players plying their trade in Spain and Italy, able to speak to the respective merits of both countries and their leagues. Rodgers admits it is a concern Suarez could have his head turned.
“You can’t control that – people getting into his ear while he’s away. These are professionals, and Luis has got a tournament to play,” he added. “But I can’t worry about that. I know we that as a club and me as a manager have supported him, told him when he’s been right and when he’s been wrong.
“The supporters show their passion for him relentlessly so, as a club, I don’t think we can do any more. We have supported him when he’s been in turmoil and when he’s had setbacks, when there’s been traumas over the last couple of years. He knows he did wrong,” Rodgers went on.
He concluded: “He was committed to wanting to stay and work with the club. I think he’s very happy here – as a club we’re doing everything to keep him and all the players content, and in the main I think they are.”
