Villas-Boas calls for improvement as Spurs face Chelsea

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has insisted his side must play better if they are to take advantage of their game in hand, and leapfrog Arsenal into fourth place on Wednesday night.

Tottenham face Chelsea in a Champions League six-pointer, knowing a win would take them level with the Blues, and ahead of Arsenal by a point.

However Villas-Boas was not too impressed with Saturday’s performance away to Southampton, a game they won 1-0 thanks to a Gareth Bale goal in the 86th minute.

‘We didn’t play well in the first half, but we deserve (the three points) after what we did in the second half. We improved and Southampton closed the spaces, they gave us lots of difficulties, but we got what we deserved in the end.

‘Today was probably not about the performance. It was about getting the result. It was not the ‘Spurs way’, but in the end it keeps us in the frame and hopefully we will improve, and play better against Chelsea. It’s a big, big game.’

Spurs have two further fixtures remaining after Wednesday, with clashes against Stoke City and Sunderland still to come.
