Wenger considering Vermaelen sale as Man Utd eye up Arsenal captain

Arsene Wenger is weighing up the decision to sell Thomas Vermaelen, the Daily Mirror has reported, with Manchester United said to be interested in the Arsenal captain.

A year ago it was Robin van Persie – then the Gunners skipper – on the move from the Emirates Stadium to Old Trafford, but Wenger was a reluctant selling party. This summer, however, the Frenchman is keen to overhaul his squad and is not thought to be against selling the Belgium international, who took the armband from van Persie.

Vermaelen lost his place under Wenger towards the end of the season as the manager preferred the pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the centre of defence, with that combination steering Arsenal back into the top four of the Premier League and helping to seal Champions League qualification.

The Mirror claims Vermaelen wants to remain at Arsenal and win back his place in the team, having moved to the club from Ajax in 2009. Thus far he has made more than 100 appearances for the club, having missed almost the entirety of his second season in North London due to injury.
