Arsene Wenger is rumoured to be considering a sensational swoop to bring wantaway Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney to Arsenal, according to the
The England international handed in a transfer request at Old Trafford earlier this month and although it was rejected by outgoing United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, the 27-year-old could still leave the Premier League champions.
And when Gunners chief Wenger, who is usually quick to pour cold water on speculation which is off-the-mark, was quizzed about the possibility of Rooney heading to the Emirates Stadium, he chose to dodge the question.
Wenger said: “Look, I’m not in a position today to speak about any transfer targets. What I am focused on is the short term and after the Newcastle game I give you answer about these questions.”
David Moyes, who becomes Manchester United’s new manager at the end of the season, has suggested that he wishes to retain the services of the former Everton player, calling him “one of the world’s best players”.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are widely expected to add to their collection of strikers this summer regardless of Rooney’s future, with Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic and Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain on Wenger’s shopping list.
