Wenger pleased after Arsenal seal crucial Champions League place

Arsene Wenger believes it was crucial to Arsenal’s future that the club was able to claim a spot in the Champions League, BBC Sport has reported, after the Gunners beat Tottenham Hotspur to fourth place in the Premier League on the final day of the season.

A Laurent Koscielny goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park, with Spurs beating Sunderland by the same score at White Hart Lane. The victory over the Magpies confirmed Arsenal in fourth and marked the second successive final day of the campaign in which Koscielny has scored the only goal of the game.

Wenger said: “Qualification means it is easier to bring in players when we have a chance to be in the Champions League,” adding: “In the last three months, we have been remarkably consistent. We won every away game and so it’s a good springboard to transfer that belief into the start of next season.

Arsenal won eight of their final 10 games of the season following a north London derby defeat against Spurs in early March, having endured a difficult season that saw early exits from the League Cup against Bradford City and the FA Cup against Blackburn Rovers.

Wenger’s side were also knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, having suffered a heavy home defeat, but recovered to win the away leg in a match that Wenger pointed to as the turning point in the side’s season.
