Arsene Wenger was full of praise for his Arsenal side, saluting their team spirit and resolve after they secured a top four place ahead of Tottenham on the last weekend of the season, reports the Daily
Wenger’s side ended their fantastic run-in with a 1-0 victory at Newcastle, rendering North London rivals Tottenham’s win by the same scoreline over Sunderland meaningless in the race for the final Champions League spot.
And Wenger was resolute in hailing his team’s focus. “I’ve had many groups in my life and this is one who has been absolutely outstanding on that front. They’ve shown a combination of quality, but attitude as well,” he added.
“In the modern day I always admire the way they behaved and their focus every day in training. Sometimes as a manager you feel as well that when a group is so dedicated and face so many storms.”
It has been a season in which Wenger, who has not won silverware with the club for eight years, was put under severe pressure with the side seven points adrift of Spurs at the start of March and knocked out of cup competition by Bradford and Blackburn
But a tremendous run of results has seen Arsenal not lose a match since a 2-1 reverse at White Hart Lane on March 3 and secure fourth spot, confining Spurs to Europa League football next season.
