Arsenal are facing a high-priced tug of war for the signature of Gonzalo Higuain, as it is being reported that Juventus have also tabled an offer for the Real Madrid striker in a bid to hijack his proposed move to London. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has said that he is prepared to spend up to £19m on the Argentinean as well as paying out £150,000-a-week in wages for him.
However one midfielder who looks to have slipped off Wenger’s radar is Everton’s Marouane Fellaini. It was reported earlier in June that Arsenal were looking to activate the Belgian’s £22m release clause. But new Toffees boss Roberto Martinez has now stated that there has been no interest in the player from Arsenal.
One player that could be on his way out of the Emirates though is Lucas Podolski. According to the Mail, Borussia Dortmund could be considering a swoop for the German striker. It is a deal that would make sense for Dortmund, as they have already lost Mario Gotze to rivals Bayern Munich and now look to be fighting a losing battle to keep hold of Robert Lewandowski.
The 27 year-old striker scored 16 goals in his first year with Arsenal following his £11m switch from Cologne last summer. However, reports from the Emirates say that the German international, currently on his way back from friendly matches against Ecuador and the United States, is happy at the club and is not angling for a move.
Other reports are suggesting that Arsenal are transfixed with the Bundesliga and are looking to treble winner’s Bayern Munich for new additions. TalkSport have suggested that Wenger has turned his attention to Austrian David Alaba, who is thought to be wanting a move away from the Allianz Arena in a bid to play in his preferred role of central midfield rather than the full-back position he has been deployed in for Munich.
However, the same sources are also suggesting that Alaba would not favour a move to the Premier League after tasting such success in Germany. It is thought that Wenger will instead turn his attention to SC Freiburg’s 19-year-old midfielder Matthias Ginter, who has been linked with a £5m move to the Emirates.
It would seem then that Wenger is looking to strengthen his squad as soon as possible, with the Bundesliga looking like his preferred shopping destination. It would also appear that the manager has focussed his attention on his forward line and midfield as areas for improvements.
