Arsenal make bid for Real Madrid striker Higuain

Arsenal have stolen a march on their competitors by submitting a bid of £20m for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, reports the Independent.

It had been thought that Juventus were favourites to land the Argentine international, however reports in Italy suggest Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez is now their first choice.

A £20m is understood to have been made, one which would break the Gunners previous record transfer fee of £15m for Andrey Arshavin.

Higuain, 25, moved to Madrid in 2006 from River Plate, and has since netted 108 league goals for the Spanish giants, including 16 this term.

He also featured in Argentina’s 0-0 draw with Colombia this month, and was sent off.

As one forward could be on his way to the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal are likely to offload Ivory Coast international Gervinho, following a campaign where the £10.7m man netted five league goals.
