Lyon’s attacking midfielder, Yoann Gourcuff, 26, looks set to leave the club, alerting Arsenal, who are said to be extremely interested, the International
While the French club have told Arsenal that midfielder Maxime Gonalons is not for sale, Gourcuff has been told that he is free to leave after four seasons. He still has one year left to run on his contract, meaning Lyon might be eager to cash in on him this summer.
Manager Arsene Wenger has long been interested in bringing Gourcuff to the Emirates Stadium, with one attempt to sign the player thwarted due to him suffering from injury at the time, as Wenger explained in 2011: ‘I was interested in Yoann Gourcuff because at one time he was available, Unfortunately we were in a hurry. We had to have players performing soon.’
The probability of Arsenal signing Gourcuff now looks exceptionally likely, with there being very few apparent obstacles. Lyon’s president, Michel Aulus, has gone on to concede that Gourcuff has had ‘no real success at Lyon’, and has said that there have been talks regarding his possible exit. Gourcuff scored four goals in 23 appearances for Lyon in all competitions last season.
