Aston Villa warn off Benteke suitors with massive price tag

Aston Villa have attempted to scare away any potential buyers of Christian Benteke by demanding £40m for the striker who moved to the Premier League last summer for £8m, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid are said to be keen on prising Benteke away from Villa Park but manager Paul Lambert has been clear in his desire to retain the Belgium international, at least in the short-term.

Atletico are understood to want Benteke to replace Radamel Falcao, who joined Monaco in a £50m transfer, while Tottenham reportedly offered cash plus Jermain Defoe in an attempt to convince Lambert to part with Benteke.

Arsenal, meanwhile, had Benteke on their radar before he moved to Villa from Genk but decided against signing the centre-forward, but Arsene Wenger would like to bolster his attacking options this summer and is keeping an eye on Benteke’s Villa situation.

Benteke netted 19 goals in his first season in the top flight of English football, with the 22-year-old in line to participate in next year’s World Cup should Belgium qualify. The Red Devils are currently top of Group A on goal difference, ahead of Croatia with both countries claiming 16 points thus far.
