Barcelona want Chelsea striker Torres

Barcelona are considering a surprise move for Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, the Daily Mirror has reported, with the Catalans seeing the ex-Liverpool forward as a back-up player.

Torres moved to Chelsea in January 2011 and has not always had an easy time of it at Stamford Bridge, but did score 23 goals for the club last season, mostly under Rafael Benitez, his former Liverpool boss.

Barcelona believe they could get a similar total from the Spain international but do not see him as a regular starter, the newspaper claims. Instead, the Spanish champions are lining up Torres as a replacement for David Villa, who could be bound for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Mirror speculates however that Torres would not be inclined to go from being a substitute at Chelsea to a substitute at Barcelona in a World Cup year, but is likely to be made available by new Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese looks to overhaul his playing staff.

One mooted possibility sees Chelsea offering Torres to Napoli, now coached by Benitez, in a part-exchange deal for Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani.
