Benitez targets Liverpool’s Suarez at new club Napoli

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez looks set to become a transfer target for Rafa Benitez at new club Napoli, reports The Mirror.

Suarez looks set for a long summer as speculation surrounding his future continues, and had already stated his intention to leave the club, citing poor treatment by the British press as the reasons behind his unhappiness.

Benitez appears to run the risk of upsetting his former club’s fans by offering Suarez a route out of Anfield, identifying the Uruguayan as the ideal replacement for Edinson Cavani, who faces interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Suarez was Liverpool’s record signing at £22.8m until the arrival of Newcastle striker Andy Carroll for £35m just hours later. He has been a popular figure on the pitch at the club, scoring many vital goals, but has also at times been involved in unfortunate incidents which have clouded his reputation.

The most recent was the biting incident with Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic – while Benitez himself was in charge at the Blues – and the 26-year-old was issued with a 10-game suspension.

He has stated his intention to leave Liverpool, and Real Madrid were also thought to be keen on offering Suarez a path out of his recent misery in England.
