Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez wants to return to his old club to sign unsettled striker Luis Suarez for new employers Napoli, the
Suarez has made plain this summer that he wants to leave Anfield, although La Liga and Real Madrid is his stated preferred destination. But Benitez is likely to need a replacement for Edinson Cavani, who is attracting attention from across Europe, and the £50m fee Cavani is likely to command would allow Napoli to spend big to fill his shoes.
Benitez was only recently confirmed as Napoli Coach, replacing the Inter-bound Walter Mazzarri, who left Napoli after four years at the helm and took the Partenopei to second place in Serie A in his final season in charge.
The 53-year-old Benitez spent the majority of last season as interim Chelsea manager, taking over at Stamford Bridge when Roberto Di Matteo was sacked in November 2012 and leading the Blues to a top four finish in the Premier League and success in the Europa League final, a late Branislav Ivanovic goal seeing off Benfica.
European exploits also solidified Benitez’s place in the hearts of Liverpool supporters as, in his first season as manager in 2004/05, the Reds came back from a 3-0 half-time deficit against Milan to with the European Cup on penalties.
