Chelsea move into pole position in race for Mangala

Chelsea have taken pole position in the race to sign Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, who has also been linked with a move to Man United, according to The Mirror.

Mangala is being chased by both clubs, but owing to the fact that Man United incumbent David Moyes is presently on holiday before officially taking up the reins at Old Trafford on July 1, new Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has seen a window of opportunity to make his move and secure the 22-year-old.

Mourinho wanted to sign Mangala during his stint at Real Madrid, and also wants to bring in some new defensive faces to keep the established line of the likes of Gary Cahill, John Terry, David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic on their toes.

Mangala made his international debut for France earlier this year, and it is believed that Porto could be preparing to slap a price tag of around £30m on his head in a bid to fend off timewasters but also ensure they end up with a decent deal out of the player’s sale.

Chelsea are not thought likely to be ready to meet that valuation, but instead will start the bidding at around £23m for a player who moved to Porto from Standard Liege for only £5.5m two years ago.
