Chelsea to hold talks with Napoli over Cavani move

Chelsea are to speak with Napoli over the transfer of striker Edinson Cavani, the Daily Mirror has reported, with the Uruguay international becoming Jose Mourinho’s most wanted after missing out on Radamel Falcao and Robert Lewandowski.

Mourinho has settled on Cavani after Falcao joined Monaco from Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund insisted they would not sell Lewandowski, despite the Poland international entering the final year of his current contract.

But Chelsea face the prospect of seeing Cavani go elsewhere too as the player has spoken of his admiration for Real Madrid, while Chelsea are said to be reluctant to pay the £53m stipulated in Cavani’s Napoli contract.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is due to meet his Chelsea counterparts this week, however, and Chelsea are willing to pay a hefty price to sign the former Palermo attacker. It is claimed by the Mirror though that De Laurentiis is aiming to use the interest of Chelsea and Manchester City as leverage to get the best possible deal for Cavani from Madrid.

The 26-year-old Cavani has been a Napoli player since August 2010, 95 goals in 127 appearances for the San Paolo club.
