Arsenal’s need for a strong central midfielder may not go as far as Marouane Fellaini after a report in the Daily
Everton boss Robert Martinez retains hopes of keeping the midfielder past the transfer window but following two impressive seasons in a blue shirt the Belgian is set to depart Goodison. Arsene Wenger is well aware of Fellaini’s £22m release clause but the Belgian is reportedly expecting a huge pay rise if he moves before September.
The 25-year-old currently earns £75,000 a week and would want to push through Arsenal’s £100,000 barrier. Only Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski are close to earning that sort of money at Arsenal and if Fellaini were to arrive Wenger may shed one of the attacking duo to make room on the books.
Yet even if Wenger does free up wages Arsenal’s board are unlikely to see a total investment of £50m for one player as good business, meaning Fellaini is set to head elsewhere before the transfer window shuts.
