Football League fixtures: Burnley play Bolton in anniversary celebration

Fans of the Football League have discovered on Wednesday the fixture list for their teams for the 2013/14 campaign – that is unless you were one of the 12 teams who knew on Tuesday who you would be facing on the opening weekend.

To celebrate the league’s 125th anniversary, six special fixtures will be played in the Championship, League One and League Two.

The top fixture is a Lancashire derby at Turf Moor between founder members of the league Burnley and Bolton Wanderers. Also announced early in the Championship was Derby County’s showdown with Blackburn Rovers.

In League One and Two, the premature fixtures announced were Preston v Wolves, Sheffield United v Notts County, Newport County v Accrington Stanley and Rochdale v Hartlepool United.

As revealed on the league’s official website, elsewhere in the Championship, Harry Redknapp’s QPR will open up on 3 August at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Owen Coyle’s new managerial chapter at Wigan begins with a tough assignment away at Barnsley, and Reading start at home to Ipswich Town. In the second tier for the first time, it is Millwall away for Gary Johnson’s Yeovil Town.

In League One, Bradford City begin away to relegated Bristol City, whilst Peterborough United welcome Swindon Town to London Road and Brentford head to newly promoted Port Vale.

Mansfield’s return to the Football League starts with an away encounter at Scunthorpe, and Portsmouth begin life in League Two at home to Oxford United.

All fixtures are subject to police requests and television movement from Sky Sports. The league is without a title sponsor for the first time since 1983, after their agreement with nPower ended at the end of last season.
