Gullit surprised by Mourinho’s Chelsea return

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has admitted his surprise at Jose Mourinho’s decision to return to Chelsea. ESPN reports the ex-Milan and Sampdoria playmaker feels the club have taken a backwards step in appointing someone again for a second time.

He told the Daily Star: “Is it a good idea for him? I don’t know. There is the same chemistry between him and the fans, yes – but the coaches who are less expected to do something win everything, the big prizes, so it’s a very difficult situation for him.

He is one of the best coaches there is, but can he do it, can he do it again? We are going to see.

Football’s worst kept secret was finally made public on Monday as the self-proclaimed Special One confirmed his return to Chelsea on a four-year deal.

He returns to England after a difficult final season with Real Madrid which ended without a major trophy, the first season to date that this has happened to Mourinho in his trophy-laden managerial career.

His previous spell with Chelsea started with back-to-back Premier League title successes in 2005 and 2006, ending the club’s 50-year league drought in the process. However, he fell out with Roman Abramovich over his interference with transfers and departed Stamford Bridge under a cloud in September 2007.

Gullit has his own managerial stint with Chelsea from 1996 to 1998. Ironically, it was arguments over transfers and contracts that led to his departure from the club.
