Gunners edging closer to Higuain signing

According to the father of Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, who has been linked with Arsenal, talks between the two clubs are at an advanced stage, reports the London Evening Standard.

His dad says that Juventus are also in the running to sign the Argentine, but does confirm that Higuain is likely to be on the move, saying: “Nothing has yet been signed but I assure you the negotiations between the clubs are at an advanced stage.

“We won’t agree a contract before the clubs reach a transfer deal. I’m sure Arsenal made a big offer, and Juventus.”

Arsenal are yet to sign anyone this summer, but have appeared keen on the 25-year-old, who scored 16 goals in 28 league appearances for Real last season.

Higuain would add to a strikef-orce that already contains Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud and Gervinho, providing competition, and representing a statement of intent from manager Arsene Wenger, who could see Higuain as someone who will aid a potential title challenge in 2013-14.

While Walcott managed 21 goals in all competitions, he mainly operates on the wing, and since Robin van Persie left for Manchester United last summer, his goals have not been truly replaced.
