Newcastle have pulled out of a deal to sign FC Twente defender Douglas, Sky
The 25-year-old Brazilian is available on a free transfer this summer and is thought to have been a long-term target of manager Alan Pardew and chief scout Graham Carr, with a deal potentially concluded this week for the centre-back.
However, Kinnear, who was confirmed as Pardew’s superior on Tuesday, has turned the club towards other targets and informed Douglas’ representatives that the club was no longer interested in Douglas. The player’s agents were due to arrive in England on Thursday to agree terms with the Magpies.
Douglas has been at Twente since 2007, winning the Eredivisie title under Steve McClaren in 2010 and the Dutch Cup a year later. A holder of a Dutch passport, Douglas was called up to the Netherlands squad by Bert van Marwijk in October 2012.
