Liverpool have agreed a fee for Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, and the £9m transfer is set to be concluded next week, according to BBC
The Sunderland stopper has been a popular figure at the Stadium of Light since his £2m arrival from Sint-Truiden in 2010, but is said to want a move to a club with silverware aspirations.
Liverpool had been expecting their own keeper, Pepe Reina, to depart the club this summer, with Barcelona reportedly interested in bringing the 30-year-old back to the club where he started his professional career.
Reina has stated he would be happy to remain at Anfield, but the interest from his homeland is sure to at least tempt the former Villareal custodian to consider that his future may lie away from the club – especially if the Mignolet deal is completed.
Mignolet, meanwhile, was one of the more consistent players for struggling Sunderland last season, having kept 11 clean sheets from 40 appearances for the Black Cats. He displaced Craig Gordon as the club’s first choice keeper during his stay at the club, but now appears set to continue his career in the north west.
