Liverpool set to hijack Everton’s move for Wigan star Kone

Liverpool could be set to hijack city rivals Everton’s bid for Wigan striker Arouna Kone, reports The Sun.

Kone scored 13 goals in his first season in English football, but saw Wigan relegated from the Premier League. With manager Roberto Martinez having swapped the DW Stadium for Goodison Park, Kone has been suggested as a name to follow the Spaniard to Everton.

However, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has also been impressed with Kone’s contribution in his maiden season, and wants to take the 29-year-old to Anfield.

With Luis Suarez looking a sure-fire bet to leave the club this summer, and with questions over the long-term fitness of Daniel Sturridge, Rodgers wants to add more firepower to his frontline, and sees Kone as a top candidate for the role.

The player has a £6.5m release clause in his contract at Wigan, and it is not believed that this would pose too much of an issue to Liverpool, who are also desperately trying to complete the signing of Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas, thought to be in the area of around £8m.

The club’s managing director Ian Ayre said: “We can still attract top players to Liverpool. It’s about finding the right talent at the right price.

“I’ve never been in negotiations with anyone who has said they don’t want to sign for Liverpool because we’re not big enough or not successful enough.”
