Mkhitaryan expected on Merseyside for Liverpool medical

Liverpool will move a step closer to the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan on Tuesday, the Daily Mirror has reported, as the midfielder is to travel to Merseyside for a medical ahead of his move to the Premier League club.

The newspaper adds that Brendan Rodgers has seen off the advances of a number of Champions League-qualified outfits in order to sign the prolific Armenia international. Big-spending French champions Paris Saint-Germain are one such interested party disappointed by Mkhitaryan’s apparent preference for a move to Anfield, with Juventus and Chelsea also in line to miss out.

Rodgers’ is said to have committed a large chunk of his transfer budget for the summer to the signing of Mkhitaryan, who scored 25 times for his club last season. The deal for the 24-year-old is expected to cost in the region of £23m, with the sale of Andy Carroll to West Ham to be used to fund a significant part of the cost.
