Jose Mourinho has rejected claims that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich forced Andriy Shevchenko on him during his first spell in charge at Chelsea, and remains optimistic that the Russian will allow him to rule whether or not Fernando Torres has a future at Stamford Bridge, reports The
The newly appoint Blues boss labeled Spaniard Torres as “so-so”, and also claimed that he knew of Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans to retire months ago.
The 50-year-old, who recently returned to West London for a second spell in charge of the club, said: “Torres so far is so-so. Somebody could expect more because of his potential, because of what he did before. But not so bad as people sometimes try to say.
“There is a balance. Normally, the tendency is to say it was a big mistake. It was a big mistake because it didn’t work. Shevchenko? It’s not true the owner forced him on me.”
Mourinho went on to explain that, at the time, he was trying to bring then-Barcelona star Samuel Eto’o to the club in order to link him up with Didier Drogba. Eventually, just as things looked set to be completed, the Spanish outfit pulled out of the deal – forcing the Blues pairing of Mourinho and Abramovich to look elsewhere.
Mourinho said: “After that, we went to other options and got to Shevchenko. I was happy with him. Even with the top dogs – when you buy for £30m, £40m, £50m, or £60m – sometimes it doesn’t work. It doesn’t mean you or the club made a big mistake. It just doesn’t work.”
Mourinho then continued with how his friend Sir Alex Ferguson confided in him plans to retire months ago, but the Portuguese insists he was never in the running for the Man united job – because he only ever wanted to return to Chelsea.
He said: “I knew Sir Alex was retiring many months ago. Why? Because we are friends. So if I am his friend to know he is going to retire, he is also my friend to know that the club I want to coach in England is Chelsea.
“Of course, I told him that. I told him I want to come to Chelsea. I would turn down everyone in the world for Chelsea.”
