Pele believes Chelsea made the right decision in bringing back Mourinho

Brazil icon Pele has backed Jose Mourinho’s return to Chelsea, the Daily Mail has reported, praising the former Real Madrid boss for his honesty and his ability.

The 72-year-old was speaking to CNN and while he insisted there is no guarantee Mourinho will be a success in his second spell at Stamford Bridge, he believes it is the right move for both parties.

Pele said: “Mourinho’s return is good for Chelsea because he’s a good coach. He is talented and very honest. I know him personally. But football is a box of surprises. He has to have a bit of luck because in football, sometimes the best doesn’t work. I wish him good luck.

Mourinho was confirmed as the new Chelsea manager on Monday, nearly six years after he first left the club. His original spell, between 2004 and 2007, brought two Premier League titles and a handful of other trophies while, in his time away, he won the Serie A title in Italy, took Inter to victory in the Champions League, and delivered La Liga back to Real Madrid.

Pele also rejected comparisons between Barcelona new boy and himself, warning of the dangers of expecting too much from the 21-year-old. “To be the new Pele would be very difficult, because my mother and my father closed the machine,” Pele said. “But no doubt he is one of the best players we have in Brazil.

Of course in Brazil we have a lot of excellent players like Zico, Tostao, Rivelino, Pele, Ronaldinho, but the last two years we have Neymar, who is very talented.

I hope he has luck in Barcelona. I didn’t like it so much because he used to play in my team, Santos. I lost a good player. But it’s important to understand that he deserves to go to the best team.
