Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool will make a run at one of the cup competitions next season now they have more strength in depth, the
The Reds were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by eventual winners – and Rodgers’ former team – Swansea City, losing to the Welsh side at Anfield, and were dumped out of the FA Cup by League One side Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park.
Rodgers however insists the squad he inherited at Liverpool was so thin that he had to focus his attention and his resources on the Premier League programme – and that the early start of Liverpool’s Europa League campaign meant he did not have time to properly build his playing staff. Rodgers’ first game as Liverpool manager came on August 2 against Belarusian side Gomel.
Liverpool are not in European competition this season, and the manager said: “This time, we’ll certainly give the League Cup and the FA Cup a proper go – we have a much better squad to do that.
“We had a paper-thin squad last year, we had kids all the way through. Obviously those players who have come in have added quality and it’s no coincidence that we have kicked on when we’ve had quality in the group.
“We need to improve the group and the depth but that’s what gives me great hope for the summer. If we can add that, we can make a real start and then we’re ready to challenge.”
Liverpool have so far signed centre-back Kolo Toure on a free transfer, with Jamie Carragher retiring, and are close to a deal for Iago Aspas, the Celta Vigo striker, with a number of other arrivals expected on the red half of Merseyside.
“You can flip it about, but it’s the depth really,” Rodgers said. “We just need to build up the depth of the squad.
“I want to have people who might be disappointed because they’re not even on the bench. At the minute we probably don’t have that so its competition we want to get. I don’t want a massive group, we want a tight group with a real core of 17 or 18 players who feel they should always be playing and then supported by a few of our top young talents.”
