Spurs target Aubameyang as Benteke alternative

Tottenham have identified potential striking targets other than Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, says The Mirror, and have set their sights on Saint-Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as an alternative.

It is understood that Spurs have made an enquiry as to the striker’s availability, with boss Andre Villas-Boas keen to land two new strikers in the summer.

Benteke, Barcelona striker David Villa and Aubameyang appear to be the three top names on his list, with progress on their long-standing effort to sign Leandro Damiao proving slow at best. The club have opened discussions with Barcelona over Villa, but with Benteke being priced at around £30m it appears that interest may have slightly cooled in the Aston Villa forward.

Aubameyang, however, has proven a case of interest, having struck 21 goals for his club this season, and he could be available for around £10m. Newcastle are also interested, but Monaco are thought to be Spurs’ toughest competition in this transfer – and Aubameyang spent a year on loan at the French outfit in 2010.

Villas-Boas is trying to offload England striker Jermaine Defoe, though Villa are not interested in a swap deal and former club West Ham are not thought keen either. However, he could be available for around £6m, with Fulham reportedly interested.

Spurs are also keen to sign Corinthians star Paulinho, and will monitor Brazil midfielder Bernard during the Confederations Cup.
