Sunderland news: Cattermole Out, Altidore In

Sunderland have reportedly told captain Lee Cattermole that he can leave the Stadium of Light during the summer transfer window as he does not fit into Paolo Di Canio’s plans, according to The Mirror.

Cattermole joined the Black Cats in 2009 from Wigan, and was made captain last season.

However, Di Canio is looking to be ruthless in his shake-up of the squad in preparation for next season, with only a handful of players on the list of those he wants to keep.

They are thought to include Simon Mignolet – who looks set to move to Liverpool next week – Adam Johnson, Stephane Sessegnon, John O’Shea and Seb Larsson.

Di Canio wants to do some major revamping work in the north east in an effort to avoid a repeat of last season’s struggles, with the club flirting with relegation until very late on despite much enthusiasm in the early stages.

He has targeted former Hull striker Jozy Altidore as a man he wants to bring in. Altidore had originally failed to impress during his time at the Tigers, but has experienced a resurgence at current club AZ Alkmaar, and the Italian boss looks set to offer the USA striker a second shot at the Premier League in a potential £5m deal.
