Alonso rules out Premier League return as Liverpool suffer double transfer blow

Liverpool have been handed a transfer double blow as two of their midfield targets have snubbed their advances. First Henrikh Mkhitaryan turned down the Reds in favour of a move to Borussia Dortmund and now old boy Xabi Alonso has rejected rumours that he could be returning to Anfield. The Daily Mail have reported that when asked about a Premier League return Alonso answered: “The Premier League? No, no way, no chance.

Alonso, along with Luis Garcia, was one of Rafael Benitez’s first signings as Liverpool manager and stayed with the club for nearly five years, winning the FA Cup, the Community Shield, Champions League and European Super Cup. In 2009 the Spaniard was moved on and joined new Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.

The 31-year-old midfielder’s contract at the Bernabeu runs out at the end of this coming season and so the door remains open for a move back to England, as Madrid continue to monitor the progress of Asier Illarramendi.

Meanwhile Mkhitaryan has completed a £20m move to join Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund despite the Reds chasing him for the past weeks.
