Arsenal have targeted Man City midfielder Gareth Barry, according to The
Reports indicate that Arsene Wenger is keen to bring the 32-year-old to the Emirates, having long been an admirer of the England star.
Barry still has a year to run on his £100k-per-week deal at the Etihad Stadium, but Arsenal are not thought to want to match those wages, nor indeed guarantee him first team football.
However, Wenger wants to strengthen his midfield and is keen to offer Barry a new challenge following four years at City.
The Gunners recently missed out on Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender, 24, and believe Barry could be a viable alternative. Wenger had tried to sign Barry five years ago, and then missed out again the following year when the then-Aston Villa star opted to move to Man City instead.
An insider is quoted as saying: “It looks like Arsenal are just weighing things up at the moment and they do have other priorities. But they know Gareth would do a good job for them.”
Barry has made 132 appearances for City, scoring six goals since arriving in 2009 for £12m. He has also won 53 caps thus far for England, finding the net three times.
