Arsenal striker search no criticism of Giroud, insists Wenger

Arsene Wenger has been quick to dismiss the suggestion that the links between his club and other strikers in this transfer window have anything to do with the performances of Olivier Giroud. ESPN are reporting that the French manager has claimed instead that a lack of attacking options in the Arsenal camp is reason behind the interest in new arrivals.

Wenger’s defence of his transfer policies comes after the north London outfit were repeatedly linked with Real Madrid front man Gonzalo Higuain, Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and the unsettled Wayne Rooney. “The rumours have nothing to do with Olivier or his quality as a striker,” said Wenger.

Giroud signed for the Gunners last year for around £9m from Montpellier after his 21-goal season steered them to first ever Ligue 1 crown. His debut campaign in the Premier League saw him bag 11 goals and he has so far netted five times on the Gunners pre-season tour of Asia.

The Frenchman’s goals from the lone striker role last year meant that he kept the likes of Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott on the right and left flanks despite the latter’s desire to play more centrally.
