Arsenal to make renewed offer for Liverpool striker Suarez

Arsenal will make a renewed offer of £40m for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, the Daily Mirror has reported, in what the newspaper terms will be a “make or break” bid from Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners have had an approach for the Uruguayan rejected already but Wenger has made Suarez his primary target for the summer after Real Madrid raised the asking price on Gonzalo Higuain. If Madrid were to lower their valuation of the Argentina striker then Wenger could resume his interest in Higuain but Napoli are circling – and if the Serie A side do swoop for the striker, it would provide Madrid with the funds needed to sign Suarez, meaning Arsenal would miss out on both players.

Madrid are said, however, to value Suarez at only £25m, far short of Liverpool’s tally and lower than the release clause said to be in Suarez’s contract. Arsenal are understood to be hopeful that their £40m offer will force the Reds’ hand while the lure of Champions League football will convince Suarez to swap Anfield for the Emirates Stadium.

Suarez has spoken repeatedly this summer of his desire to leave Liverpool, originally claiming to be eager to depart English football altogether because of coverage in the media of his on-field transgressions. The former Ajax captain still has to serve the majority of his 10-game ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic last season, regardless of the club he is at by the start of the new campaign.
