Arsenal could be set to miss out on midfield target Asier Illarramendi, according to The
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is thought to have been keeping tabs on Illarramendi’s progress at Real Sociedad for some time now, but now looks set to miss out after Real Madrid entered discussions with their fellow Spanish outfit regarding the transfer of the player.
Illarramendi was identified as a holding midfielder who would fit perfectly into Wenger’s vision for next season, but with Real’s emergence into the fray the north Londoners look set to lose out to the club from whom they are making one of their biggest signings in years.
With Gonzalo Higuain looking set to complete his move to the Emirates before too long, Real could be set to spend the £23m or so they get for the Argentinian on Illarramendi, who they are believed to have targeted as a replacement for Xabi Alonso.
The former Liverpool midfielder has only a year left on his contract at the Bernabeu and looks like he could well return to the Premier League , with the Anfield club joining Chelsea in the race for his signature.
Spanish paper Marca reports that Real’s discussions with Sociedad over Illarramendi are now at an advanced stage, with £25m being the suggested fee.
